Highlighting and contouring are a big buzz for this season!! Everyone is looking for that “Kim Kardashian” flawless finished face.  The question I always get is, “How do I use the makeup properly and where do I apply for the best highlight results?”  My answer is always, “I’m glad you asked.”  Let’s get into the world of highlighting and contouring.
A highlight draws attention to a certain feature of the face by reflecting light. There are several products that can be used, but the 1st requirement is healthy skin. Be sure to exfoliate once or twice a week for the best results of renewed skin to work upon. When the skin isn’t properly exfoliated dead skin cells begin to layer themselves on the face leaving the skin dull and textured.

Step 1: Moisturize and prime.
When executing a makeup app. this step usually precedes all others.

Step 2: Choose your product.
Some desire a bold, “here I come”,  highlight – which most times is achieved with concealers that are at least two times lighter than their complexion. This look can also be achieved with highlighting powders that contain mica, a large particle that reflexes light causing a feature to appear more profound.  However, others opt for a more subtle approach. A more subtle highlight is created with skin care products like illuminating moisturizers and face primers. These options are perfect for the “girl next door” who wants to make a softer statement.

Step 3: Applying products with proper placement:
Take a flashlight and shine is above your head. This is a great way to see where the plains of the face are highlighted and contoured. Allow this to be your guide during the application process. The bridge of the nose and high plains right above the cheek bones are great ways to start this trend. For the more seasoned artist, try highlighting yourself right above the mouth and tip of the chin. Softly highlight the mid forehead area right above the nose to complete the look.

What is highlighting without contour?  They simultaneously work together.  In fact, once you have highlighted the face, contouring will naturally occur.  To contour is to create a shadowing effect. The area will look as if it’s receding in contrast to the highlight which appears to be coming forward.  Creams and liquids can achieve this look but most people choose powders because of their ease when applying and moving around.  Be sure that when choosing a contouring product it contains NO SHIMMERING ATTRIBUTES!! It should have a matte finish in order to create the illusion of a shadow. Contouring can also help to minimize features like unwanted fat pockets under the jaw line.   Remember to start out with less product. It’s easier to add to the application than it is to erase a heavy-handed mistake. Have proper tools a well, brushes, sponges, etc.  Aim for a look that best suites your individuality. Every face is different and uniquely shaped. Create YOUR signature highlight and contouring regiment, set your very own trend that others will want to follow!
